Coffee Break: Mad Hatters Tea Room, Chester

When you find yourself stuck on a rainy ‘summer’ Sunday afternoon, you’ve got two choices. You can either stay home and wait for the clouds to pass or you can go out and brave the storm for a slice of cake. And you know any option with cake is the right one.

That's exactly what we did last month on a day out in Chester when we came across the super-cute Mad Hatters Tea Room. Located on the The Rows, this tea room's cosy setting and colourful display of cupcakes made it the ideal place to get out of the drizzle and indulge.

On this occasion we opted for Harry's hot chocolate - with marshmallows and cream obviously - and a couple of rainbow sprinkled vanilla cupcakes. Absolutely amazing, the best cupcakes we've had in a long time and you can even buy some of your own hot chocolate to try at home.

As the name may suggest, there are plenty of Alice-themed accents throughout for any Wonderland fans out there from the special Afternoon Tea names to the rustic menus - we will definitely be back soon to try The Red Queen's Afternoon Tea (priced at £20pp).

The Mad Hatters Tea Room is open 7 days a week. For more info and to check out menus visit their website.

Top Summer Afternoon Teas to Take Away

Lancaster London
It's now easier than ever to take a tea break in London, with many hotels and cafes offering afternoon tea to go. Here are three of the best take away options available in the Capital this summer.

Lancaster London

For those of you craving a summer treat in the park, why not pick up an afternoon tea bag from Lancaster London and head across the road to Hyde Park, for a day of fun and food in the sun - weather permitting of course! The package features a selection of tasty British treats, including: Mini passion fruit & raspberry macaroons (yum!); fresh-out–the-oven Scones (plain and raisin) with home-made strawberry jam and Cornish clotted cream; plus Iced tea in a retro glass with straw.

Prices start from £19.50 per person

The Park Tower Knightsbridge

Good news - the Park Tower Knightsbridge is now offering a takeaway version of their signature Knightsbridge Lounge Afternoon Tea.  The set comes in a beautifully designed three-tier takeaway carry box that includes traditional Afternoon Tea favourites with a posh twist, such as Ivory white chocolate and pistachio pastry with gold leaf; Shot of Granny Smith apple & wild blackberry, vanilla panna cotta; and Walnut and whisky buttercream cupcake.

Prices start from £19.50 per person

BB Bakery

So, you've heard of the BB Bus, Boat and Covent Garden Cafe, but have you heard about their wonderful Afternoon Tea delivery service? Keeping in line with the bakery's love of iconic British transport, their on demand Afternoon Tea will arrive in an original London Taxi, ready for you to enjoy either at home or outdoors - ideal for a mid-summer treat when you're craving a BB fix. The selection of snacks includes, finger sandwiches, cakes and freshly baked scones, along with a range of classically British teas.

Also look out for the BB picnic, which is available to collect from store with 24h notice!

Prices start at £19.00 per person

If you live outside of London, fear not because plenty of regional venues also offer take out/mail order options too. We can highly recommend the Rosewater Bakery and Bettys home delivery hampers to anyone on the look out!
