The Afternoon Tea Club Reviews: 60 Hope Street, Liverpool

Last weekend, I visited Liverpool with my friend Caroline to check out the city's new British Music Experience and take in a spot of afternoon tea at the ever-popular 60 Hope Street.

Located on the award winning 'Street of the year 2012', this beautiful Georgian Townhouse has an abundance of kerb appeal, with sweeping staircases, the occasional flower garland (we literally missed the latest display by a matter of days!) and a quirky luggage installation entitled "A Case History" just a stone's throw away.

Inside, the Georgian features have been largely stripped back to reveal an altogether more modern interior, with neat wooden tables and subtle grey shades across the walls, offering an ideal contrast to the restaurant's original open fire places.

The afternoon's crockery - a mish-mash of Cath Kidston, Royal Albert and Charity Shop chic - made for a wonderfully kitsch experience, complementing the renovated surrounds perfectly. I was particularly drawn to the lovely blue teapots with golden embellishments, that immediately stood out as a focal point on the table setting... before the cake came along to distract my attention!

Presented traditionally on a three tiered stand, the afternoon tea itself offers a good range of food for the reasonable price of £16.95 (without fizz) and includes favourites such as: Cucumber, Egg, Ham and Coronation Chicken sandwiches, Salmon Roulade wraps, Strawberry Scones and a cake selection.

Particular stand outs on the day had to be the seasoned Coronation Chicken sandwiches, which were freshly made to order on soft white bread, and the decadent chocolate and raspberry torte which provided a fitting finale to the afternoon.

The strawberry scones were another highlight which came ready prepared, to save time working out that Jam to Cream ratio or debating which goes first - 60 Hope Street are firmly in the cream then jam camp, by the way!

I have to say that I was really impressed by what 60 Hope Street have to offer and would definitely recommend them to anyone visiting Liverpool for the day. Their food selection is very reasonable and although it only comes with the generic options of tea or coffee, this takes nothing away from the overall experience.

It's a bit of a walk away from the main Liverpool One shopping areas, but this allows the perfect opportunity to really earn your cake - and believe me, the walk makes it taste all the sweeter!

The Afternoon Tea Club Reviews: Tower Ballroom, Blackpool

Blackpool rock, The Illuminations, The Big One - there are many things that Blackpool is famous for but perhaps the biggest one, the one you spot first when driving up from the M55, is the iconic Blackpool Tower. Last month, we took a trip to the seaside to visit this historic landmark for a spot of Afternoon Tea. Cue ballroom dancers, finger sandwiches and something called a Wurlitzer.

Tea is taken in the Tower Ballroom where tables surround the dance floor which is in full swing with couples waltzing away to the Tower’s resident organist - a particularly exciting sight for these two Strictly Come Dancing fans! The decor here is spectacular, the details are so rich and ornate brushed with golds and deep reds, it really makes you feel as though you’ve been swept away to a completely different time.

The tables are already set with blue traditional style wares and guests are allotted an hour and 30 minutes sitting and a choice of teas or coffee to start, we opted for pots of both.

There’s something so northern about this experience, the finger sandwiches are simple, laid back, “everyone’s favourite” kind of flavours presented alongside a handful of salted crisps, they’re not super fancy deconstructed creations that you might find in a London hotel, but that’s perfect for this place and set amongst the backdrop of one of the most beautiful venues you could ever hope to visit, it’s already got the upper hand. Flavours include a range of ham, beef and cheese - caution, these sandwiches do go quite heavy on the cheese so if you’re not a fan, it’s probably worth mentioning so in your booking for an alternative. For us, we would have liked some salmon or chicken fillings but there was plenty to pick from regardless.

Sandwiches are followed shortly by a large fruit scone each, accompanied by individual jams and huge dollop of clotted cream and finally a range of miniature sweets including; chocolate tiffin, strawberry and cream meringue, honeycomb and fudge bite, and a fruit tart. It’s a really pretty and balanced mix of cakes, none of which are too heavy, and our favourite had to be the sweet and light meringue.

We left feeling nicely full and ready to go score some tokens in the famous seafront arcades. Overall, this tea is pleasantly informal and there’s a unique atmosphere to be found here, something that remained throughout our visit with the hall steadily full of people. It’s quite magical to think that every weekend, there are hundreds of people spending their afternoons twirling around in a grand ballroom and stopping to partake in something as simple as finger sandwiches and tea. We’re so glad we got to experience it, and highly recommend that you do too.

Tea for Two is priced at £50. For more information and to book visit: www.theblackpooltower.com

The Tea Makers of London Review

The popularity of green tea has grown a lot over the last few years and it seems as though no desk snack draw is complete without a loose leaf pick me up. Famed for its supposed healing properties and skincare benefits, the choice of brands and flavours is vast and forever growing. We recently got the chance to try some interesting blends from British tea company, The Tea Makers of London - here's what we thought ...

The Tea Makers of London was founded by a Sri Lanken tea expert with the goal of sourcing and creating a unique tea experience, or to quite simply “create the perfect cup of tea”. The company kindly sent us three different flavours to taste, each with its own tantalising exotic name: Jasmine Dragon Pearls, Dragon Well and Sencha Supreme.

To start, the packaging is simple but elegant and stamped with ‘The Great Taste Awards 2016’ seal of approval. The large pyramid tea bags are also minimalistic, showing off the high-quality loose leaf tea inside.

Who wouldn’t want to try a tea with such an interesting name? Christened Dragon Pearl because of the pearl shape of the tea, this artisan tea is made from silver needle green tea leaves and Jasmine flowers which give it a yellow hue. A gorgeous fresh, floral scent that hits you straight out of the box and a pleasant smooth taste.

This emerald green tea is made up of a selection of pan-fried teas and is apparently chock-full of vitamins. This is your all-rounder tea classic green tea, it’s mild, easy to drink, which makes it the ideal kind of brew to just chill out with. A great choice for any time of day as it's not too strong.

This Japanese blend benefits from 800 years of tea-farming which has led to this unique flavour. This one is a little more of an acquired taste, it’s slightly more bitter than the others and its aroma is quite pungent. However for avid green tea drinkers, we think the heightened sensual experience make it an interesting choice for those after authentic flavour, soaked in a rich history.

So, have the Tea Makers done their job? Have they created the perfect cup of tea? In the land of green tea, they're certainly in the running and we can understand why they've racked up so many 'Great Taste' stars.

A traditional choice, but a classic for a reason, our favourite was the Dragon Well flavour, a lovely smell and just the right amount of flavour for a satisfying green tea. If you're looking to try a selection of teas that offer an expansive range of tastes and styles, we would definitely recommend checking out The Tea Makers of London.

The Afternoon Tea Club Reviews: Marco's New York Italian, Sheffield, Pt. 1

Champagne and popcorn.

It's been almost two years since we last visited Sheffield for Afternoon Tea, so when we were invited to come and try the brand new Afternoon Tea menu on offer at Marco Pierre White’s New York,  Italian Restaurant, we thought what better excuse than to hop on the train and pay the Steel City a visit.

In keeping with the New York Italian theme, there are two types of Afternoon Tea on offer: Traditional and Italian. Luckily for us we didn't have to face the difficult task of choosing which one and got to overload on cake from both (Part 2 to follow).

Starting with the Italian, the tea arrived presented on a vintage style, vine box turned tea stand bursting with food - so don't make the mistake on filling up on the paprika popcorn beforehand! To begin there's an interesting array of savouries including bruschetta, salmon bagel, pastrami on rye and pulled pork roll. It's an interesting mix of flavours and styles, some traditional Italian and others much more contemporary but there are enough flavours crammed in there to ensure there's something you'll love.

Italian Afternoon Tea.

For the hardcore-traditionalists out there, you probably won't be over the moon about the skipping over the scones but honestly, there are so many miniatures, sweets and even surprises to follow that you won't even notice.
Heavy on the chocolate theme (yes please!) the tea featured chocolate chip cookies, chocolate brownies, chocolate covered strawberries, orange and polenta cake and cronuts. The cronuts were absolutely delicious followed by the strawberry milkshake shot - there's a huge trend for a mini milkshake with tea these days and we're absolutely loving it.

Savoury selection.

And just when you think you couldn't eat anymore, there's an extra surprise waiting for you when you finish in the form of a "wow" box featuring mini biscuits with dipping chocolate. Such a unique touch and one you'll definitely make a little room for.

The tea side of things was a little less adventurous and we were asked a little while into our food whether we would like tea or coffee. The staff were more than happy to cater to our tea choice but it would have been nice to see a full tea menu. However, we were quite settled with a glass of champagne so the tea could wait!

Mini "Wow".

If you're looking for something a little bit different with a few special touches, Marco's New York Italian is definitely a must try. The staff were really attentive and the food is just delicious. Look out for part two of our review next week!

Marco's Italian Afternoon Tea is priced at £16.00pp or £19.95 with a glass of champagne. For more info and to book visit: www.mpwrestaurants.co.uk

Bloggers Afternoon Tea Party - Patisserie Valerie, Manchester

Time for Tea
Spending our days taking tea for two, we don't often get to meet many other other bloggers so we were very excited when we were invited along to our first blogger Afternoon Tea event at Patisserie Valerie, Manchester.

Having visited this fabulous high street, Belgian-born tea shop on many occasions for coffee and cake (check out our review), we were rather happy to learn of their brand new traditional Afternoon Tea offering. Served on a three tier stand, this collection of mini treats houses all of the favourites you would expect from a classic Afternoon Tea menu and a little taster of Patisserie Valerie's famous cakes.

The "jam or cream first?" discussion of course came up!

To start we had a selection of finger sandwiches including smoked salmon with cream cheese, classic cucumber, egg mayonnaise and cress, ham and mustard, chicken with pesto and sun-dried tomatoes and for something a little different, a mini vegetable quiche. Our fave was the chicken but it looking around the table, our blogger friends were huge fans of the quiche.

A couple of good sized scones followed with our own individual pots of jam complete with their own unique message - "Spread a little joy", very cute! Then for the best bit, the patisserie selection which included chocolate eclairs, Victoria sandwich, carrot and walnut cake, double chocolate mousse and a mixed berry mousse slice. The whole table was drooling over the berry slice and we can concur, it was delicious but for us the winner had to be the super indulgent chocolate mousse.

A taste of Patisserie Valerie.

To top it off we each had a pot of Earl Grey - probably not the most exciting choice we could have gone for being the resident tea experts but you can't beat a classic!

All in all, a lovely afternoon spent with some equally lovely ladies - even with the miserable Manchester rain (Come on, it's July!).

Patisserie Valerie's Afternoon Tea for Two is priced at £25 and available from most stores across the UK. For more information, visit their website www.patisserie-valerie.co.uk.

The Afternoon Tea Club Reviews: Épernay Champagne Bar, Manchester

Tea Stand
Apologies for this sorely out dated post. They say 'time flies when you're having fun' and in this case it has - by about four months. Anyway, a review's a review and as this tea is still very much available, I thought it'd be nice to jot down a few thoughts that I had about Épernay, when I visited back in late February.

For those of you who don't know, Épernay is one of Manchester's best champagne bars, frequented by the city's rich & famous and YoPros alike. Located in the back room of the main bar, their afternoon tea spot is absolutely delightful, with big open windows which allow for lots of natural light - perfect for enjoying glass of champagne in!

Champagne is a must when visiting Épernay, and I was delighted to be greeted with a glass upon arrival. However, if the bubbles aren't really your thing, fear not, because  they also offer a good selection of alternative cocktails for your delectation.

Their food was also good. Whilst not as big a selection as other places in the city, the range at Épernay is certainly interesting. With mini muffin sandwiches, served on a range of breads, and fillings including cheese, tuna and ham, this tea offers something a little different to the usual fingers, whilst the cakes are super soft and delicious. In fact, my only minus point in terms of the food was its colour - or lack of - as you might be able to see from the pics. It's only a small note, but I do like to have a strong visual palette when taking afternoon tea, so I found this a little neutral - however the cakes were delicious (particularly the Bakewell Tart) so I was able to forgive this!

All in all, I'd say that this is definitely worth a try if you're looking for somewhere new to take tea in Manchester. If you go, let me know what you think!

Top 5 Gentleman's Afternoon Teas for Father's Day

Afternoon Tea isn’t just a ladies game you know! Just in time for Father’s Day the pies, mini fish and chips and whiskey selections have been creeping in to take the place of macaroons and mini pastries on the classic Afternoon Tea menu to give you the perfect excuse to treat your dad … and yourself! Here’s our pick of 5 of the best we've spotted so far...

108 Brasserie - London

108 Brasserie

This Men’s Afternoon Tea is a little bit posh. Here you’ll find no finger sandwiches in sight but rather a grilled rib eye steak sandwich and free range pork & black truffle sausage rolls. Wash it all down with a pint of Guinness or authentic Irish whiskey for £28/£35 pp.

DoubleTree by Hilton – Manchester

We had the pleasure of visiting this rooftop afternoon tea hotspot last year in their exclusive skylounge (review here). Now this Afternoon Tea in the city has been given a manly makeover to include mini burgers, fish and chips and a pint of Manchester Bitter. Price pp. is £21/24 and booking is required.

Park Plaza, Cardiff

Dainty but macho nonetheless, this offering is filled with meaty bites including a Brecon Venison burger and Welsh sirloin steak with caramelised onions and garlic mushroom on toasted ciabatta. Be sure to leave some room for the Rum Baba filled with Chantilly cream and raspberries. All this for £19.50pp.

The V&A Hotel – Manchester

Scones with a twist are on the menu at this Manchester retreat with cream cheese and red pepper relish relegating the classic the jam and cream. Top it off with a good old Manchester Tart for a sweet finish for just £16.95 pp. Check out our review from when we visited last year.

The Milestone, London

We’re huge fans of the old world glamour and delectable Afternoon Tea menus at one of our favourite London tea parlours and have had the pleasure of indulging in both its traditional and Gentleman’s tea options (See our review). Treat dad to a savoury medley including chicken lollipop skewer and toad in the hole and to finish a trio of heady whiskeys. Prices start at £36.50 pp.

The Afternoon Tea Club Reviews: The Lawn Collection

The Lawn Collection.

As always, it’s one of our fave things in the world to arrive home to some tea samples through the letterbox and this week’s posted treats came from The Lawn, a boutique tea company based in the Cotswolds.

Starting with the classic breakfast tea, the English Breakfast brew is a good strong cuppa for those difficult Monday mornings and packaged in a pretty polka-dot box makes it an ideal gift for the tea lover in your life.

Classic Breakfast Tea in a classic vintage cup.

We also tried a selection of fruit and classic flavours including Green & Peppermint, Rooibos & Rhubarb and Earl Grey. We're always a fan of peppermint tea so that very much welcomed but our fave was the rhubarb - a unique flavour but very subtle.

Finally, the highlight from the selection was the Rose Garden Fruit Tea. The beautiful, summer floral perfume invites you in straight away and the gorgeous pink rose buds are just lovely – this is quite simply summer in a jar. It’s fruity, refreshing and we highly recommend taking a few moments to enjoy this blend, relaxing in your garden.

Lauren loves ... Bluebells Café Tearoom, Battle, East Sussex

When you think of Afternoon Tea you would be forgiven for your mind wandering straight to good old London for your traditional scones and tea fix. But sometimes it's those hidden gems dotted around the country's historic hotspots that provide the best setting for a perfect cake-filled treat. Afternoon Tea Club guest blogger and newest addition to the ATC family, Lauren Barber, recently visited Bluebells Café Tearoom in Battle, East Sussex. Here's what she thought ...

More cake anyone?
"I visited Bluebells last month with my two sisters and my Mum. The tearoom is located in the town of Battle, where the Battle of Hastings, 1066, took place. Bluebells tearoom overlooks the Historical Norman Gatehouse, the heart of the town and is a beautiful setting to spend the afternoon indulging the sweet tooth.

Bluebells is owned by Tina, and run by herself, her partner and daughter. At once when you enter the tearoom, you get a lovely ‘home comfort’ vibe. The family remain professional with each other but give off a very relaxed and friendly ambience. The tearoom is small and dainty, with two rooms, one significantly more inviting than the other. The front room, with the gorgeous Georgian style window, overlooking Battle Abbey, has a real ‘Shabby Chic’ charm. I was drawn to the gorgeous wooden cabinet with the array of vintage glass cake domes sporting a variety of mouth-watering bakes. In the same room there is a cosy fireplace which added to the ‘homey’ feel, with cute baking plaques hanging - a lovely touch. The back room, where our table was, unfortunately lacked the same atmosphere. Although it was connecting with a reasonably wide corridor so didn’t seem completely separate from the heart of the tearoom, it did feel a bit bland. Apart from one canvas with a photo of bluebells on, the walls were plain so it was a bit disappointing to be led through the charming front room into the back to our table.

We settled onto our table and were given the choice of breakfast tea or coffee. Three of us requested the tea, my sister asked for a soft drink instead and the staff listed the available drinks and said that the replacement wasn’t a problem. Two delicate vintage teapots with matching teacups, sugar cube and milk pots arrived shortly after our order. I noticed the detail of the flowers painted on the china was of course bluebells - a lovely personal touch.
I realised quickly when the tea arrived, the lack of space on the table there would be for the cake stands. Due to it being a busy Mother’s Day service, the tables were quite full and so four of us on a table that ideally would be fit for two, especially for Afternoon Tea, was going to be a struggle.

Cute wall decorations.

When we had been given our drinks, our server explained that every afternoon tea is freshly prepared for a customer’s order. I was pleasantly surprised to hear this, knowing that our food will be made fresh, and ‘just for us’ was teasing my wait for the delicious food I was about to indulge in!

We didn’t have to wait long at all, we were presented with two three-tier cake stands both full to the brim with an array of sandwiches, scones and baked goods. My first impression of the whole stand was how generous the portions were. The sandwiches were not your typical small finger slithers, oh no, they consisted of what seemed like a slice of bread for one sandwich, of which we had three each. The fillings were very appetising too: ham & pickle, cheese & coleslaw, and salmon & cucumber. The ham & pickle and the salmon & cucumber both came on soft wholemeal, floury fresh bread. The cheese & coleslaw sandwich was made with a soft white bread. All three varieties of sandwiches were very delicious and moreish. The cheese & coleslaw, a combination that I hadn’t had since my childhood, was my favourite of the three. Never before have I enjoyed that first layer of an afternoon tea as much as I did at Bluebells!

After already filling ourselves with sandwiches it was onto the scones. We had two each and there were a variety of types of scone that the four of us could choose from (or fight over!) including raspberry, blueberry or plain. Once again, the sizes were very generous and pleasing to the eye. They were clearly freshly baked, still soft on the inside but with a crisp glaze. The raspberry scone along with the tangy raspberry jam and thick clotted cream was just heavenly.

Afternoon Tea close up.

After demolishing the scones we were really starting to feel full but the cakes and biscuits awaiting us looked just too good to refuse. On the top layer was a plateful of different baked goods. For each of us there was a chocolate brownie, a raspberry cupcake with a beautiful piped vanilla swirl and wafer flower on top, a few chocolate dipped strawberries, a shortbread round and a slice of lemon drizzle cake alongside a large slice of apple cake to share. We ate the brownie first - they were gorgeous. Crisp and cracked on the outside yet chewy and melt-in-your-mouth on the inside. The shortbread had a good crunch but still buttery and lovely.  We were really struggling to eat everything by now but luckily we were offered the Bluebell’s takeaway box to put the rest of the bakes in.

After finding enough room to finish the tea, I can confirm the cupcake was a light vanilla sponge cupcake with a raspberry inside. I didn’t try the apple cake but my mum said it was delicious and the lemon drizzle cake had just enough tang to it and was lovely and moist. Overall the top layer of the tea offered plenty of variety to cater for different types of sweet tooth. All the bakes were clearly freshly baked, very good quality - just mouth watering.

The service we received was fantastic. The three members of staff clearly care very much for each and every customer and go above beyond to give good service. From replacing the drinks from the menu to suit our needs, asking for more milk for our tea and providing us with the takeaway boxes, the service we received was top notch. The staff are welcoming, friendly and easy to talk to adding to the relaxed and friendly atmosphere Bluebells offers.

I am already making plans to return to Bluebells. From the first impressions of their home baking, cosy family vibe to their freshly baked delicious food, I can hardly find a fault in this charming Battle tearoom."

Bluebells Café Tearoom is located in Battle, East Sussex. Afternoon Tea is served daily at £12.95pp. For more info visit www.bluebellstearoom.co.uk.
